I have been watching coverage of the war in Ukraine for the last 35 days or so. Not consistently, but often enough, often because either it was the only thing on worth watching, or someone else had control of the remote. It is important to document, but it has, weeks ago, become almost headache-inducing to watch. I have concluded that:
Vladimir Putin is a power-mad sociopath who will perform any atrocity on Ukraine in order to build a Russian kingdom.
President Biden will not do anything to stop him, slow him down but not stop him.
I cannot take issue with Biden for not wishing to start WWIII.
Putin is a war criminal who has lost Russia to the dustbin of formerly great countries.
Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. But seeing constant, nonstop coverage on CNN and Fox and MSNBC is not helping. It is creating, at least in me, a sense of fatigue and hopelessness. It’s one thing to inform, but saturation coverage of anything is seldom the answer unless it directly and existentially affects those who are watching it. Yes, YouTube and the internet can have constant livestreaming of the war and its horrors; after all, more people have access and interest in their cell phones nowadays than they do in television (there is a reason why so many ads on cable TV are directed at old folks). In some quarters, I might be considered old. I don’t care at all. But I would rather watch a large screen than a miniature one, and not because I can’t see. So it has gotten to the point where my favorite political shows have become unwatchable due to their constant war coverage.
I haven’t heard anybody else voice anything similar to my opinion. Any feedback would be welcome, as I like to learn different views which might help me shape my own.
